A diet high in fats and proteins of animal origin increases the risk.



  • The prevalence of BPH increases linearly with age, in all ethnic groups. In general, it affects men older than 45 years and the presentation of symptoms usually occurs at 60 or 65 years of age. Obesity, especially at the abdominal level, increases the risk of clinical BPH by 10%.

Some laboratory tests allow the exclusion of associated conditions that increase the risk of failure to treatment or a differential diagnosis in case of doubt:

-Glycemia: with the objective of excluding diabetes mellitus.
-Creatinine: for an evaluation of renal function, only in the cases considered necessary: ​​Request glycemia and creatinine, according to medical criteria and in selected cases.

Bladder and prostate ultrasound (US) with residual urine measurement can help determine the size Prostate and residual urine volume, which helps predict the benefits of medical treatment or guide surgical management.

The alpha blockers, are more effective than 5 alpha reductase inhibitors, to improve symptoms in the first year of treatment and its effect is manifested from the first month of treatment initiation. They are recommended in all patients who are candidates for medical treatment. The recommended doses of alpha blockers available are:

  • Alfuzosina 10 mg diary
  • Tamsulosina 0.4 mg diary
  • Terazosina 2-5 mg diary
  • Doxazosina 2-4 mg diary
